Local MP Alan Campbell is supporting the Tyne and Wear Trading Standards Joint Committee’s campaign to raise awareness of unsafe toys.

The Committee manages and directs a UKAS accredited test laboratory which reports quarterly on a number of issues including toy samples that have failed to meet the requisite safety requirements.

The Committee have expressed concern for a number of years that a percentage of toys sampled by Trading Standards officers from local retailers contain high levels of heavy metals such as lead and chromium. 

Alan Campbell said ‘This is an important issue.  Especially at Christmas time, when we are all buying lots of presents it is completely unacceptable that people should be at put at risk in this way. The Committee have asked me to support the campaign and I have written directly to the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform to highlight the issue and raise these understandable concerns.
